On Friday 21 June 2019, innovation took over the whole of the ground floor of Alder Hey’s new Speakman Building to showcase innovation in paediatrics and child health.

NIHR CYP MedTech was invited to demonstrate some of the exciting and novel projects we are currently working on.

The day began with a series of talks from healthcare professionals and industry experts, including David Cole, Head of Business Development and Innovation for IBM and co-founder of Thinking of Oscar.

There was a range of different workshop, including what Innovation means, hints, tips, and ways to be innovative and offer general advice around how to problem solve.

There were also different maker style activities such as 3D printers, Computer Aided Design, coding, and hands on crafting sessions so attendees could learn some new skills and have a go at trying out new things.

The Innovation Centre’s Rapid Prototype Centre was also opened, enabling faster and easier development of innovative technologies for chid health.

Mr Iain Hennessey is Clinical Director of Innovation at Alder Hey and leads NIHR CYP MedTech’s Paediatric Surgical Technologies theme.
