Innovation Workshop: Measuring Outcomes in Childhood Movement Disorders

Friday 31 May 2019

On the 31 May 2019, NIHR CYP MedTech, University College London, Global Disability Innovation Hub/Designability and Evelina London Children’s Hospital hosted a workshop to explore the development of innovative technologies for the management of paediatric movement disorders.

The event was chaired by Dr Gimeno from Evelina London Children’s Hospital and Dr Adlam from University College London. The workshop was well attended by industry, clinicians, researchers and patients. The event began with talks introducing the nature of movement disorders, challenges associated with measuring outcomes, novel therapies and future developments in measurement technology. Speakers included key academic and clinical leaders in the field of dystonic movement disorders. Talks were also given by Boston Scientific and Dystonia Europe who described innovative developments in technology for dystonia patients.

Delegates were able to take part in interactive breakout groups in order to discuss unmet clinical needs and potential solutions associated with four main areas: (1) dystonia measurement; (2) goals/activities of daily life; (3) pain; and (4) participation. The workshop concluded with delegates pitching project ideas to other workshop attendees and there was keen involvement of delegates to be part of future project teams to take innovative ideas forward.

We will follow up with the potential projects identified in order to facilitate new exciting developments in technology to effectively measure outcomes in movement disorders.

NIHR CYP MedTech would like to thank the other organisers, University College London, Global Disability Innovation Hub/Designability and Evelina London Children’s Hospital for helping to facilitate the successful innovation workshop. NIHR CYP MedTech would also like to thank the speakers and delegates who all contributed to this workshop and the sponsors (UCL Institute of Engineering, Metz and Boston Scientific) for their generous donations.
