Professor Heather Elphick at The Healthcare Show

Wednesday 29 May 2019

Professor Heather Elphick, our Respiratory and Sleep theme lead, is speaking in the Improving Care Pathways Workshop at the Healthcare Show in London on 26 June 2019.

Professor Elphick will be speaking on the AHSN initiative around child asthma involving Aseptika’s Activ8rlive and Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

More than 1 million children are receiving treatment for asthma (NHS England) making it the most common chronic medical condition among children and young people (CYP). The UK has the third highest risk of death from childhood asthma (OECD) and a third of these are preventable (NRAD 2014).

Paediatric asthma is an NHS 10-year priority and innovative approaches to managing the increasing number of children with moderate-to-severe asthma in specialty paediatric units is needed.

Smart inhalers and Health Apps such as Asthma+me SMART in a digitally evolving NHS have the potential to support self-management of long-term conditions such as asthma at scale, to support digital transformation of health services to risk stratify according to need and to provide a personalised approach to care, thereby showing both clinical and economic benefit by reducing emergency admissions and improving patient safety and quality of life.
