Super Surgeon Innovation Workshop

Thursday 02 May 2019

NIHR CYP MedTech and Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust hosted a workshop on the 02 May 2019 to explore the design and make up of surgical scrubs. Since the 1970s, surgical scrubs have remained largely unchanged in their design.

During the workshop, industry designers, academics, clinicians and charity representatives discussed whether a newer, updated alternative scrubs outfit could be created. Aspects discussed were current issues with surgical wear and the design process to make improvements that would meet the requirements and desires of scrub staff and surgeons.

Attendees took part in productive discussion groups focusing on different aspects of improvement and the ideas were then presented as potential projects to the other workshop attendees.

NIHR CYP MedTech is excited to help move these innovative ideas forward as part of the Super Surgeon programme, which is led by Mr Iain Hennessey at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

NIHR CYP MedTech would like to thank the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Innovation Team for helping to organise the workshop and are grateful for support from the European Regional Development Funded (ERDF) Health Innovation Exchange Project. Additionally, NIHR CYP MedTech would like to thank the attendees who all contributed to significantly to the workshop discussions, idea generation and potential outputs.
